the F word.

I think a lot about fashion, though I rarely write about it. I'm just often entertained by mishmash of everything, the blending of different textures, colours and patterns. People may call it a big waste, spending so much energy, money and time on superficial things. Yes, fashion is about how things look when they're put together. It is superficial. But I believe there's an additional depth in it. Personal story behind every piece. And aesthetic values are priceless—how things may change how you feel today. Like how bright colours energise you, and cool colours spread a hint of mysterious air to the atmosphere.

Most people say, "I wear what I want to wear." OK. That's good. But firstly: WHY do you want to wear them in the first place? To catch people's eyes and attention? To look rebellious? Or simply to blend into the society? To me, fashion can only give one reason behind dressing up: to make yourself happy. If you're not doing it sincerely—if it doesn't make you happy—it's not fashion.

Definition of fashion differs from one to another: you may think that Docs in flower prints are totally a fab piece, whereas a reliable fashion source reviews it as a super tacky pair. And you think, "Does it mean I've got a terrible taste in fashion?" NO. NOT AT ALL. Just because they say this designer is a genius you don't have to sweat yourself trying to confirm it. We should realise that each of us has a different, personal taste. And remember, there's something beautiful about diversity.

Some of my fashion may not be conventional, it is not something so universal that everyone can appreciate. I like experimenting and not playing safe, so I totally understand if some of the people I meet on streets can't help but give a long stare. But, on top of that, I'm happy—that's the most important thing. Are you happy drowning your feet in your new pair—be it your brand new Chanel clogs or your treasured thrifted boots? If you are, then it's enough to define your fashion.

The kind of fashion I'm talking about here is not the commercial one. If you want to be a personal fashion adviser, of course there are some norms and rules you have to stick with. "Vertical stripes to make you look taller" or "Belt enhances those whose body are of a particular shape". But they're trying to make people look proper, presentable, not out of place. It's a different purpose indeed.

Therefore, ask yourself, evaluate again: what is the purpose of your fashion? I've found mine.

Some photos only as a preview. I have no current intention of turning this blog into a fashion blog, I'll post all these and the upcoming looks on my lookbook account. On a totally unrelated note, been listening to Flight Facilities - Crave You endlessly. What an amazing and soothing song! And yes, my exams are not over yet...peeking at my camera, tonnes of photos and stories to be told....will post soon after November 12th, the last paper! Have a good day ahead, lovely readers!

(PS. Take part in Lalita Tian's giveaway on her blog here to stand a chance of winning a lovely Sou Brette necklace!)
